Working Plan

General Work Plan Description

Overall concept and goals

SuSI will assess the innovative potential of pork production with immunocastrates (IC) in a multi-actor approach with regard to economic, environmental and social sustainability. We hypothesise that IC will provide a more sustainable alternative to surgical castrates and entire males with regard to animal welfare, consumer satisfaction, environment and economics, if proper management is applied and an objectification of discussions about IC is reached. Regulatory, socio-economics and cultural differences up to the regional level need to be considered. This goal is efficiently addressed by involving specialists across Europe with high expertise in specific disciplines and knowledge about regional production. The SuSI consortium represents universities (UHOH, UL-VF, WU, WULS), research institutes (KIS, ILVO, INRA), pig producers and breeder organisations (DanAvl: SEGES), in close collaboration with local initiatives.
